Security Issues
2004 heralded the implementation of Canada’s first privacy legislation “Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)”. This legislation has very broad implications for businesses from the smallest to the largest. Essentially it makes businesses and their owners responsible for the data they collect and host on their computer systems. It is not obviously apparent how Canada’s new privacy commissioner will go about enforcing this legislation, but it is our opinion that at a minimum, procedures should be put into place as to what data a business is allowed to collect and how this information is being secured.
“Organizations throughout the globe are concerned about new and emerging security threats to their businesses that surpass typical network level attacks, according to results of a security study commissioned by NetScreen Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: NSCN) and conducted by independent research firm, Vason Bourne, Ltd.”
In order to secure data not only are business now strongly advised to have internal procedures in place, but also to protect against Internet Attacks with some type of “Firewall” in place. Another imperative would be company wide Anti Virus Protection.

The recent release of Microsoft Windows Small Business Sever 2003 (SBS) puts incredible power and flexibility in the hands of almost any business. With Microsoft’s new pricing, businesses with up to 75 users get the power of Microsoft’s Windows 2003 together with much of Microsoft’s Back Office product Suite. The total investment for 5 users can be less than the cost of a workstation computer. For this you get a server that can handle file serving, email, SQL databases, shared faxing and a fax server, a Web Internet or intranet (internal) web site.
Small Business Server 2003 is the easy way for small and medium sized businesses to get the power of the Windows Server operating system plus Microsoft server-based solutions for e-mail, fax, database and security-enhanced, shared Internet access – all in one integrated, simplified solution at an affordable price.
Bottom line, Small Business Server 2003 helps small and medium size businesses work smarter with fewer resources.

Security Issues
The US security financial reporting legislation (Sorbanes-Oxley act) has been with us for some time now, and Microsoft have recently announced a compliance tool that users of Microsoft Office systems can use free of charge. Many Canadian companies doing business in the US must comply with these regulations, and can also now take advantage of this compliance tool.

2004 heralded the implementation of Canada’s first privacy legislation “Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)”. Functionality includes Internal and Internet e-mail hosting, File Serving, allowing users to send and receive faxes through Outlook, and the ability to host an Intranet and /or Internet Website. In fact an Intranet Website is installed as part of the regular installation procedure; and is extremely easy to use, allowing group collaboration on documents and projects.

Another neat feature of Microsoft Small Business Server 2003 is Remote Web Workplace. Users can connect through the Internet to read their e-mails, check appointments, see contact information and shared folders; they can even be set up to access their own computers remotely.

Security Issues
According to the Information Technology Advisory Committee (ITAC) of the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA) the number one issue for Canadian Business is INFORMATION PRIVACY. From January 1, 2004 Canada’s first privacy legislation “Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA)”, has been in effect, making all businesses and their owner and officers responsible for the data they collect and host on their computer systems.

In January 2003 the disappearance of a hard disk containing customer information in Saskatchewan, caused a scare across the country. Fortunately the disk was later recovered. Almost all business today have some type of FIREWALL and ANTI-VIRUS protection in place, or they should have. But what about your PHYSICAL SECURITY!! Is it possible for someone to physically remove data. Two clients of ours were recently robbed; in both cases ONLY COMPUTERS were stolen. Which begs the question, WHY? Computers are not very valuable; are they after the INFORMATION contained therein? Information that PIPEDA makes all businesses and their owner and officers responsible for!

Altrim Systems has recently started to offer security in the form of Security Camera and Recording Systems, These Systems can digitally record activity from multiple cameras and multiple locations, and archive theses videos for months at a time. These extremely affordable, commercial quality, Video Surveillance and Management Systems can be used not only to monitor computers, but any area of your business (inside or outside). Among the many features and benefits are:
  • Live and recorded monitoring of multiple sites both locally and remotely. over Broadband Internet or Dial-up.
  • Up to 540 days of video recording storage.
  • Motion detection triggering of alarms, e-mail, pagers etc.
  • Events and Access Logs, with security rights assigned.
  • H.263 Video Compression.
  • Live video monitoring using a standard web browser via Web Casting.
  • The ability to have two way audio between a remote client and the monitoring server.
  • The ability to have Pan, Tilt, Zoom (PTZ) - remote and local - with specialized cameras.

Securing your valuable data and in fact the total enterprise consists of a planned approach which we at Altrim would be more than pleased to be a part of.

Security  means more than Firewalls and Anti Virus Protection. The PHYSICAL SECURITY  of your data and other business assets must also be part of the overall plan. Automating this PHYSICAL SECURITY may also in fact reduce Insurance Premiums.
